April Trip to Utah

Our trip out to Utah for our niece's wedding started out so nicely. The kids played happily together & were just silly.

Then suddenly, violently, & without warning, WE CRASHED! It was an exciting crash. A little too exciting for all of us & we were extremely blessed! We were about 11 miles east of Vail coming down the mountain in a pretty good snowstorm. We were driving cautiously, but not enough I guess. As we went around a slight bend in the road we started to slide. We fish-tailed a bit, hit the concrete barrier on the left side of the road & spun around & ended up on the side of the mountain in a ditch on the right side of the road. Gratefully, a tow truck wasn't too far behind (about 15 minutes behind us) & he towed us out & took us to Glenwood Springs. It was strange, our car wouldn't start (I guess there is this inertia switch that you have to push after an accident so it will start again) & with the flat the way it was in the ditch we couldn't change it. We were glad for his help. It was also really funny having 6 people smooched into the cab of the tow truck. Not the most comfortable way to travel, but it was better than walking. We were very lucky to have such minor damage compared to how scary the situation was.
Unfortunately, it took almost 6 hours to get the tire changed & to check for any other non-cosmetic damage. This made for a really long day & a much later visit than planned stopping to visit Rick's Grandma. But we certainly enjoyed the time we got to spend with her.

The next morning we headed up to Logan for Kyra & Kevin's wedding. The wedding was beautiful & we really enjoyed being able to be there for it & to spend time with family. (Lexie loved getting to play with all of the girl cousins.)

It was also nice that all 11 of Cheryl's siblings could be there. We had a lot of fun playing cards & chatting with everyone.
Thankfully, our trip home was much more peaceful than the way out. We even found a dolphin in the sky. Can you find it?

How Do You Sell a Duck to a Deaf Man?

In Joy School we had a class talent show. All of the kids got to choose what talent they wanted to share. Joseph chose to share his wonderful talent of telling corny jokes. Enjoy!

Celebrating Joseph's Birthday

Since we were travelling on Joseph's birthday, we weren't able to make him a cake until we got home. As you can tell from the picture, he had a lot of input in decorating it.

He patiently waited many days until he could finally open his presents. He was pretty happy with them.

He especially loves riding his new bike & scooter with his family & friends.

We cannot believe he is 5! He sure is a sweet, wonderful boy & we love him so much!

Our Texas Two-Step

When we asked the kids where they wanted to go for Spring Break, Lexie said she wanted to go to a hotel with an indoor swimming pool and Joseph said he wanted to go to Sea World. So we decided it would be easy enough to accommodate both desires and also get to visit some family by going to Texas. On our way to San Antonio, we had a layover in Houston where the kids thought this model of the Space Shuttle was pretty cool.
Once we arrived in San Antonio, we quickly checked into our hotel, changed clothes, and headed to Sea World. We hadn't been there long before we ran into some friends from home (the Mortensen's) - that was fun to see familiar faces while visiting another state.
Lexie loved the smaller roller coaster, but Joseph and Andrew were terrified on it and wouldn't go a second time.
Andrew saw this little bench with pillows on it in the hotel room and thought it was a fantastic place to sleep. Too bad his parents thought that was too precarious of a place for a two year old to sleep on.
The next day we spent the morning swimming at the hotel pool before celebrating Joseph's birthday just the way he wanted - by going back to Sea World. Even though he didn't care for the rides, this little boy sure loved the shows and he can never get enough dolphins! Getting to feed the dolphins was one of the highlights for the kids.

The kids also couldn't wait to play in the water park area. That was nice to sit down and rest for a bit while the kids had a blast getting wet.

By the time we were headed back to the hotel, we were pretty beat. Somehow Lexie and Joseph found enough energy to pose for a picture with birthday balloons and a cupcake before going to bed.

A fun birthday surprise for Joseph was that he got a brand new cousin! Rick's brother's wife had their baby a little earlier than expected, and Joseph thought it was so cool that he would get to share his birthday with one of his cousins. The following day we drove down to Houston to spend Easter weekend with family. We went straight to the hospital to see baby Serenity (OK, I guess we also were going to see her parents, too). I'm so glad our kids love babies and are so sweet and gentle with them, it's really cute!
After the hospital we went to Cheryl's brother's house where we stayed for the weekend. It was great for the kids to have cousins to play with, and Lexie especially loved getting to spend time with four other little girls. She really loves her brothers, but she really wants a sister!

On Monday morning we stopped by Johnson Space Center to check out Rocket Park. They have an Apollo rocket there that is very impressive. Rick's brother stopped by with his family, so we had the chance to have our questions answered by a real rocket scientist. Although the kids thought the rocket was cool, mostly they just liked running around with cousins and picking bouquets of wild flowers outside the warehouse.

After lunch at Mom Alone (great authentic Mexican food with AMAZING fish tacos), we took the kids to Challenger Park for some space entertainment that they would appreciate a little more - a really big playground.

On our final day we drove back to San Antonio. Our first stop was at the Alamo. It was neat to learn more of the historical implications of what happened there, and Andrew seemed to enjoy the pictures quite a bit.

Next we spent some time on the Riverwalk. It is a fun atmosphere, but would have been more enjoyable with bigger kids and smaller crowds (lots of people because of the women's NCAA championship basketball game that night in San Antonio). We would also recommend avoiding the Panini shop on the Riverwalk (not only did we have to wait over 20 minutes for cold and overpriced Paninis, but they tasted bad, too).

Our final stop before flying home was visiting the San Antonio temple. It's always impressive to see how beautifully the temples are made and maintained. The stained glass on this temple was absolutely gorgeous. We're glad we had time to stop and see it.

A Birthday Package

Grandma & Grandpa sent Joseph a package for his birthday. This little boy really loves dolphins & was pretty excited about his new shirts to wear on our upcoming trip to Sea World.

Also in the package were some Easter treats for the kids. We're not quite sure how anyone can stand to eat Peeps, but our kiddos seem to really like them.

Happy St. Patrick's Day

No corned beef & cabbage for us this year.

But we did have rainbow cupcakes! YUMMY!

Tooth Number 4

After school the kids went over to play with our neighbors. They love to play over there & usually nothing really exciting happens. But today I got a phone call.

Lexie called to say she was eating some crackers for snack and "somehow my loose tooth fell out because I bit on it because I thought it was part of a cracker. So I asked Kiffon if my tooth fell out & Kiffon pulled it right out. Then she washed it off & put it in a ziploc bag for me."

We are so grateful to have good neighbors who take care of the drama we bring to their house. :)

Notice Anything?

Yep, Andrew managed to get his jammies on backwards. And when we tried to help him put them on the right way, he pitched a fit. So, we let him put them on again. Amazingly, he could even zip it up by himself. Oh, our talented children...

An Awkward Moment

Andrew isn't all that shy. And he is really good at pointing out letters wherever he goes. While we were at my sister's house this week, her sweet 12-yr old daughter was just standing there minding her own business, when Andrew walked up & started pointing at her behind & saying the letters there. She was a lot bit surprised. We all laughed & Andrew was so proud that he spelled out the letters on the seat of her pants. So, you've all been warned, think carefully about what you wear in front of Andrew or he may just poke you in the behind.

An Apple a Day-Or More

It cracks me up to watch my kids eat apples. They seem to eat them non-stop! They will eat until they think they've eaten enough to be done. And then ask to see if it was enough. What I don't love...finding half eaten apples on the counter. We're still working on teaching Andrew that the other half can be eaten, too.
